Origins and development
The cemetery was developed between 1948 and 1956 to Erich Ahlers’s design and opened in 1956. Excavated material from Werdersee raised the grounds by approximately six metres. Gerhard Müller-Menckens designed the buildings. The ensemble has been listed since 2015. The later Gartenstadt Werdersee development to the east is distinct from the cemetery grounds.
Origins: Opened in 1956. The cemetery is in Bremen-Huckelriede, between Habenhauser Landstraße and Werdersee, at Habenhauser Landstraße 70, 28277 Bremen. Its area is approximately 27.1 hectares.
Design and present-day character
The park and lawn cemetery forms a landscape with Werdersee. Modern funeral buildings, the crematorium and broad green areas distinguish it from Bremen’s older cemeteries.
Read this character description together with the development of Huckelriede Cemetery: it identifies what gives the grounds their present identity without turning the cemetery into a purely historical attraction. A visit can focus on spatial structure and named orientation points while leaving individual graves undisturbed.
